Tips on Meditation [REPOST]
19/10/2020
It’s a gloomy kind of day today. A lead blanket of low vibes hangs heavy on the town today. It’s a sleepy, somber kind of day. The perfect kind of day for some wicked witchery and dark mischief!
….Or in this case, a talk about one of the key components of magik. Meditation.
I don’t care what you heard, you can’t do any substantial magik without meditation. It just doesn’t work like that. Meditation is the gunpowder that makes the bullet fly, so to speak. It is the whetstone upon which we sharpen our very will. If an arrow is crooked and has many branches, it will not land it’s target. It might not even fly at all.
How do you expect to hit your target* if you are shooting with a crooked arrow? How do you expect to get anything done if your will is not focused?
That being said, I feel like I should pause to mention that I am in no way a professional at meditation. I am a far cry from a Buddhist monk or wise Guru. I am simply a humble cryptid with a laptop and A LOT of free time. My ruling planet, Mercury, inhabits Sagittarius in my natal chart. This position is considered detrimental in Astrology and therefore makes my mind like a young horse; wild, fast paced, and all together clumsy.
Not to mention that forming the habit of meditation is incredibly difficult. Especially when you have children, pets, jobs, social lives, room mates (especially room mates intolerant of such things as Witch Craft), the list goes on. So how do you do it? Especially since it is so vague and no one ever has much more to say than “Just sit with your eyes closed and breathe!”.
Well, you may take comfort in the fact that there are actually many types of meditation! The type of meditation that comes to mind first is usually “mindfulness meditation”; you sit quietly, cross legged and focus on a single thing. Maybe an object like a representation of a deity or your own cycle of breath. This modality stems from Buddhist teachings. The goal here is to focus entirely on the one thing; to allow your thoughts to pass but to not engage with them. I, personally, find it to be the most difficult type of meditation… by far. My mind chatters incessantly like a little monkey. It needs a job to do so that my body can relax.
Which brings me to the next point on my list… Moving meditation. Oh yes. You can move while you meditate. Bet you didn’t know that was an option! In fact, with moving meditation you are able to hit two birds with one stone here. You can slow down your brain and focus your will whilst getting in some light exercise as well. I highly recommend this modality for anyone who is restless and fidgety by nature. Tai Chi, Qigong, and Yoga are all very common forms of this, but don’t be mistaken! You can do movement meditation in any physical activity, all you need is a repetitive physical action that allows your “logic brain” to take a back seat. Running can be meditative for some people, gardening may also fall under this category. Hell, even just quietly walking through the woods can have a meditative effect.
However, I still highly encourage you, dear reader, to practice seated and still meditation wherever you can. I feel like this type of meditation really benefits you in the context of spell craft. In my personal experience, it has allowed me to dive deeper and pull to the surface very powerful energy that I don’t believe I could have accessed through movement. It is difficult, yes, but it is well worth the effort.
“But, Sigrid!” you weep “I am too fidgety! I can’t sit still!”
Don’t worry, there are ways around that too! Visualization and “body scanning” techniques are very easy to do and don’t require the purchase of anything like singing bowls (which, by the way, are not actually Tibetan, they’re actually called “standing bells” and originate from Northern India and are not inherently ritual tools). Not to mention there are hundreds of excellent guided meditation videos on Youtube to help you learn these techniques. Another good technique is to use a mantra! Mantras are very common in Buddhist and Hindu modalities (I know you’ve heard “Om” before), but the concept can be observed in many other practices as well such as the daily prayers a person of Islamic faith might perform. You can do complex mantras or simple mantras. The point here is to have a word or phrase and repeat in rhythmically. You can say it loudly, you can say it softly, doesn’t matter.
The last technique I want to share with you is “focused” meditation, that being meditation achieved through one of the five senses. This one is also a personal favorite of mine, for it gives my restless meat body something to do. You can count mala beads (or rosary beads, even). You can use a standing bell. You can stare at a candle flame. Sometimes I’ve even picked up a pen, closed my eyes, and just let my hand trace along the paper; this technique is called “Automatic Writing”**.
Bottom line is, with any type of meditation, the key is to just go for it. With all witchcraft, there is a degree of experimentation to be had. What works for me might not work for you and that is okay. Just remember to breathe and re-center yourself when your mind gets off track. Start small, take 5 minutes before bed every night to sit and just feel it out. Before you know it, you’ll be meditating like a champ and your spell craft will be on point every time.
Happy meditations, dear reader! Blessed Be.
* By “hit your target” I am in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM talking about cursing or hexing people. It’s just a metaphor. Please don’t burn me on a stake. k thnx
** NO, AUTOMATIC WRITING WILL NOT MAKE YOU A TARGET OF DEMONIC POSSESSION. Actual demonic possession is rare and you really can’t get possessed unless you let yourself get possessed. Anyone who tells you automatic writing conjures demons is either 12 or has probably never conjured one before
